Tennis shoes are an essential part of your athletic gear, and keeping them clean not only helps them look good but also extends their lifespan.

Regular cleaning can remove dirt, sweat, and odor, ensuring your shoes stay fresh and perform at their best.

Whether you're dealing with stains or stubborn scuff marks, here's how to clean your tennis shoes the right way.

a bucket of cleaning supplies

1. Gather Your Supplies

Before you start, make sure you have the necessary supplies:

  • - Mild detergent or laundry detergent

  •
  • - Baking soda

  •
  • - Soft-bristled brush or old toothbrush

  •
  • - Warm water

  •
  • - Cloth or sponge

  •
  • - Mesh laundry bag (if machine washing)

  •
  • - Newspaper or paper towels (for air drying)

2. Remove Laces and Insoles

Start by removing the laces and insoles from your shoes. This allows you to clean every part of the shoe thoroughly. You can wash the laces separately in a small bowl of laundry detergent and warm water, or place them in a ventilated space to air dry.

Did You Know? The tiebreaker, also known as the tiebreak, was indeed introduced by James Van Alen in 1965 as a way to speed up tennis matches and prevent overly long sets.

3. Shake or Brush Off Loose Dirt

Take your shoes outside and shake or tap them to remove any dirt or debris. You can also use a soft brush to scrub away surface dirt. This prevents excess dirt from getting into the fabric during cleaning.

4. Prepare a Cleaning Solution

Fill a bowl with warm water and add a small amount of laundry detergent or powder detergent. Wash tennis shoes with the resulting solution. Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach, as these can damage the materials of your shoes.

5. Clean the Shoes

Dip a soft brush into the solution and gently scrub your shoes. Focus on mud stains, scuff marks, and any heavily stained areas. If necessary, you can use white vinegar or a heavily diluted bleach solution for tougher stains to wash shoes.

Use a stiffer brush to scrub the soles of your tennis shoes, paying attention to any grooves where loose dirt or grass stains might hide. This ensures your athletic shoes maintain traction during play.

History Highlight: Don Budge is the only male player in tennis history to have won six consecutive Grand Slam singles titles, from Wimbledon in 1937 to the US Open in 1938.

7. Rinse and Wipe

After scrubbing, rinse the shoes with clean warm water to remove any soap residue. Remove excess moisture and dirt using a cloth, being careful not to soak the shoes.

8. Deodorize with Baking Soda

If your shoes have developed an odor, sprinkle baking soda inside each shoe and let it sit overnight. This will absorb moisture and unpleasant smells. Shake this out before wearing the shoes again.

9. Dry Properly

Avoid using a dryer for your tennis shoes, as the heat can damage the materials. Instead, stuff the shoes with newspaper to help them keep their shape and speed up the drying process.

Air dry shoes on a drying rack or in a well-ventilated space, and ensure they are fully dry before wearing them again to prevent mold or mildew from forming.

Properly drying shoes helps maintain their structure and prolongs their lifespan.

Fun Fact: The fastest serve in men’s tennis came from the racket of Australian Sam Groth at 263.44 km/h.

10. Clean the Insoles and Laces

For canvas shoes and other athletic shoes, hand wash the insoles and laces with the same solution. Allow them to air dry completely before reinserting them into your shoes.

Bonus Tips

  • Spot cleaning: For minor stains, use a cloth with a small amount of cleaning solution to treat the area without washing the entire shoe.

  •
  • Wash shoes: If your shoes are machine-washable, place them in a mesh laundry bag and use a gentle cycle with cold water. Avoid machine-washing leather or suede shoes.

  •
  • Regular maintenance: Clean your tennis shoes after every few uses to avoid the build-up of dirt and sweat and maintain their appearance.
